Machines Sensing Emotions

This is a podcast with Lex Fridman hosting Dr. Rana el Kaliouby.  Rana is a pioneer in bringing emotional intelligence to artificial general intelligence.  Another way she expresses her goal is bridging the gap between machines (AI) and humans.

The discussion commences with Rana’s remarkable journey to triumph. Hailing from Egypt, she pursued her undergraduate studies at the American University in Cairo, and then fearlessly embarked on her graduate studies at the prestigious University of Cambridge. Rana, the visionary founder and C.E.O. of Affectiva, leads a company with a mission to utilize AI to comprehend human emotions and cognitive states by analyzing facial and vocal expressions (Wikipedia).

Lex drew on Rana’s inspiring nature by asking her what advice she had for other women.  Several of her noteworthy points were,

  • Reframe any negative feedback as an opportunity for growth.
  • She is a faith-driven Muslim who does what she feels is good for humanity.
  • Don’t let your doubtful thoughts be the biggest obstacle to success.
  • Include self-affirmation and self-love in your meditations.

Lex and Rana concluded by revisiting the topic of emotional intelligence.  Emotions are an integral part of our cognition, communications, and language.  The intriguing question that lingers is, can your internal state be discerned by your facial expressions and body language?  The future, with Rana el Kaliouby’s groundbreaking work, promises to be a fascinating exploration of this realm.
