Dr. Chris Palmer, M.D.
Dr. Palmer, a distinguished assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, has significantly contributed to our understanding of the relationship between mental health and metabolism.
In this book, Dr. Palmer demonstrates quite convincingly the relationship between mental and neurological disorders and problems with metabolism and mitochondrial function.
Statistics on mental health continue to show increases in all categories. The causes of most mental illnesses remain unknown, but many risk factors have been isolated. Also, genetic causes remain ambiguous. Much of the research has focused on brain function with no consistent findings.
The brain uses 20% of the energy produced in the body. It’s reasonable to assume that a steady and reliable energy flow to the brain is essential for brain functioning. A correlation between mental disorders and diabetes has been known for some time, providing a clue between metabolism and mental health.
The mitochondria are referred to as the powerhouse of the cell. They also have a long list of other functions essential to brain health and proper functioning.
Dr. Palmer continues with numerous examples drawn from his practice. These examples show success in relieving a variety of mental disorders by focusing on metabolic health. This is another example of how medicine that is functionally driven is far more effective than medicine that is oriented toward the relief of symptoms.
