The Gene

By Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee

This is an earlier book by the same author as Song of the Cell. Read my book review to understand why I had to follow up with this one.

Dr. Mukherjee’s journey begins with a poignant exploration of his family history, which is marked by several instances of gene-induced maladies among his relatives.

He then delves into the early explorations of Mendel, Darwin, LaMark, and others, which not only generated the first theories of heredity but also laid the foundation for our understanding of the transmission of information between generations, a topic of immense significance.

This naturally led to speculation on influencing, controlling, and altering this transmission and the field of eugenics.  This took two directions—one towards improving the species and the other toward preventing the reproduction of individuals with undesirable traits.

The remainder of the book covers the research difficulties and triumphs that followed.  It introduces the cooperative and competitive personalities that brought us to where we are today.  It then concludes with speculation on promises of a future in which man controls his evolution.

This is another literary masterpiece from Dr. Mukherjee.
