The Logos at Ephesus

Dr. Jordan Peterson

This is a lecture on the Logos from the Greek perspective given at the ancient Greek city of Ephesus, located in modern-day Turkey.  The event was part of a tour of Greece by the Inaugural class from Ralston College in Savanna, Georgia.

Western society derives its culture from two sources: the Greek and Judeo-Christian traditions. Fundamental to the Greek worldview is that nature has a “discernible, palpable, and benevolent order.”  The cosmos was comprehensible. The Judeo-Christian perspective contributed that this order was explanatory and could be communicated. From this, science emerges. The Logos is the intrinsic order of the cosmos, macro and micro.

Points covered in this lecture worthy of reflection are,

  • An individual embodies the Logos as an agent of inquiry and creativity.
  • An ethic is a hierarchical structure of values. The only way to see the world is through a system of values, which provides a model for emulation.
  • Joy is moving toward a valued goal. This requires a hierarchy so we can set priorities.
  • If you don’t know where you are or where you are going, “predators of the spirit” are waiting for you. This can lead to a sense of loss, hopelessness, and nihilism.
  • The hierarchy of the greatest good begins with the divine. The image of the divine is a personal thing.  So many other things depend on it for their definition and existence.
  • Determine the nature of the spirit that inhabits you when you are oriented towards the highest good.
  • The divine within you lays out the hierarchy of the greatest good for you to emulate and calls you on it when you don’t follow.
  • A thriving culture shares a common hierarchy of the greatest good. Without it, things become chaotic.
  • Our culture today is deplete of a common hierarchy of good. We see the infiltration of the “predators of the spirit” lusting for power and control.  Fortunately, we can also see the pushback struggling to maintain some semblance of order and salvation of the spirit.

Once again, Dr. Peterson shares his wisdom and insights with us in an incomparable, emotion-filled event.
