Until the End of Time

Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning In an Evolving Universe

Professor Brian Greene is a theoretical physicist, mathematician, and string theorist at Columbia University.  He is also Chairman of the World Science Festival, co-founded with his wife in 2008.  (Wikipedia).

Dr. Greene writes for general audiences, presenting leading theories and concepts in a format and terminology we can all understand. His ‘World Science Festival’ features lectures and panel discussions featuring many of the leading thinkers in the world of physics today.

In this book, Brian takes us on a journey from the Big Bang through speculation on how it will all end.  This book is much more than just science.  In it, Brian shares his thoughts and feelings and the development of his philosophy.  I will outline the main points, and the scope of this work should become clear.

  • Discovery is driven by the need to leave something behind that survives death. We long for an answer to why it all matters.
  • A discussion of the elementary processes of entropy and evolution and its results and implications. This includes a lengthy discussion of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics.
  • The early cosmic activity shortly after the big bang, the formation of the sun, larger atoms forming in the sun’s interior, and the formation of the solar system.
  • The chemistry of self-replicating and catalyzing molecules, RNA/DNA.
  • Thoughts on how life can produce the mind. How the mind’s particles can produce subjective experience.  Theories of consciousness.  Free will.
  • The manifestation of language, imagination, belief, and the sacred.
  • The impermanence of it all, the death of the sun and solar system, and finally, the end of the universe.

This book has far more than I could capture in a brief list.  It has the power to influence your fundamental worldview.  Don’t miss it.
